The Application of UX and Usability Standards in Browser-Based Virtual/Augmented Reality Environments

Our hands-on accelerator workshop will focus on 1) Introducing UX/Usability heuristics and standards, 2) The application and an evaluation of these standards in a browser-based virtual/augmented reality environment using Mozilla Hubs, and 3) Share our preliminary findings. Using a combination of presentation and hands-on interaction and usability testing, our program will provide a basic theoretical and applied framework for understanding and conducting UX and usability in general and then apply these in a virtual/augmented reality environment using attendee laptops and/or mobile devices without the need of a VR headset.

The value and timeliness of this accelerator resides in the growing emergence of Extended Reality (XR) information environments which includes three primary mediums - virtual reality (VR or fully immersive), mixed reality (MR or digital plus physical reality), and augmented reality (AR or physical with a digital aspect). XR is growing exponentially in popularity due to the emergence of browser-based virtual reality environments that can be served using a URL hyperlink and accessed on a computer or mobile device free of a traditional VR headset. This includes Mozilla Hubs, Frames, and Unity among a growing number of other software developing in this space.

While websites and digital documents typically represent 2D or two dimensional information access (e.g., top or down, left or right, etc.) the emergence of virtual reality 3D spaces introduces 360 degree movement and information organization and access (e.g., up or down, front or back, etc.). This third and extra dimension introduces new information environments where traditional usability principles and rules may or may not apply. Our program will be provide both theory and applied hands-on experience with new 3D browser-based VR/MR/AR spaces and discuss and demonstrate current and future implications for UX and usability testing and evaluation.

Learning Objectives:

  • After the program, participants will be able to define basic UX and usability concepts, heuristics, and standards.
  • Upon the completion of the program, participants will be able to describe the usability pros and cons of a VR/AR environment.
  • After the program, participants will be able to define the similarities and differences between VR, MR, and AR.
  • After the program, participants will be able to demonstrate their ability to access browser-based virtual/augmented reality.
