Uncovering Unsung Sheroes: Teaching Women's History in Hip-hop

In this hands-on facilitated workshop, we will present the contributions of women in hip-hop and highlight their often-overlooked impact on the genre. Using the ELA and Social Studies common core standards, we will examine the cultural and historical context in which these women emerged and analyze the themes in their music from the pioneers to the early 2000s. We will also discuss their challenges in a male-dominated industry and how they paved the way for future generations of female artists. The workshop is designed to be used with public and school librarians for middle and high school students to amplify and augment students' understanding of this vital aspect of the Hip-hop culture. Attendees will learn:
How to analyze the cultural and historical context of women's contributions to hip-hop.
Identify and explore themes in the music of women in hip-hop.
Discuss women's challenges in a male-dominated industry and their impact on future generations.
Attendees will receive a workbook that can be modified for their specific programming needs, which they can bring into their classroom and easily teach. They will be able to adjust existing lessons or create new ones that are more inclusive and feel more relevant to all students.
