The BookBag summer reading program exists for our students to have access to summer reading material as well as snacks and hygiene items.
During the school year, students have the opportunity to access free or reduced lunch, weekend food bags, and hygiene items in addition to library books. But many students struggle during the summer when school resources are unavailable. How do we make sure they have access to what they need while removing barriers and stigma? How do we level the field for underserved populations? Answer: a reading program that hits all of the students' needs in a way that preserves dignity. Food, hygiene items, and summer essentials (beach towels, water bottles, sunglasses, etc.) capitalize on the excitement of summer and draw students who like giveaways.
As educators, we know that basic needs must be met to maximize student learning and well-being. As librarians, we know that reading is a vital part of student growth. Combining these two fundamental needs in one program resulted in hundreds of books being given out along with basics for student health and wellness.
Learning Objectives:
Identify student needs that occur when school is not in session
Define hygiene equity as it pertains to their students and their communities
Create an action plan to address equity needs in their community
Conduct a student survey to determine how best to create summer reading programming
