Library Programs and Services

Partnering for the Success of English Learners

The pandemic ushered in a time of uncertainty for the pre-K-20 educational system. Many schools struggled with understanding how to provide optimal services for students. While all students and educators were impacted, English Learners (ELs) experienced greater learning losses due to the lack of understanding about providing resources for them. Results from a survey of school librarians indicated there is a need for training to help them to assist ELs. Following the survey, a forum was held with stakeholders such as classroom teachers, public librarians, technology experts, school administrators, and linguists. A toolkit was created based on stakeholder suggestions. This interactive presentation shares the toolkit and hosts a discussion about strategies and partnerships for assisting ELs in school libraries.

  • Identify at least 5 best practices for engaging English Learner youth in school library settings.
  • Identify how to collaborate with at least 3 types of stakeholders to provide services for English Learners in school library settings.
  • Locate at least 5 resources to support English Learners in school library settings based on self-perceived professional development needs.
