Community Outreach and Engagement

Library Programming for Expectant Parents and Parents of Newborns that Build Community Partnerships

How can we reach expectant and new parents from underserved populations with the message that literacy begins before birth, letting them know the important role they play in their babies' development while showing them playful ways to talk, sing, and share books with their babies from the very start? "Mother Goose on the Loose: Hatchlings" has completed two successful pilot years with English and Spanish speakers in Maryland, and Pilot year 3 concludes in October, 2023, highlighting a new community partnership involving Maryland's early community learning hibs, called Judy Centers. Learn about the challenges, the adaptations, and the overwhelmingly positive evaluations for this joint Maryland State Department of Education/Maryland State Library Agency/Mother Goose on the Loose project. Consider becoming a participant!

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe at least one way that putting research into action via Hatchling promotes social responsibility (one of ALA’s Core Values)
  • Name at least one way to expand access to diverse populations for expectant parents and parents of newborns.
  • Demonstrate ways that songs and rhymes can be adapted for newborn babies to strengthen parent/child bonding.
  • List at least two ways in which libraries can collaborate with community partners (and other librarians) to expand their range of service and ability to reach underserved communities.
  • Use survey data to convince administration, boards, partner organizations, and funding sources that initiating Hatchlings’ programming would increase outreach to underserved populations and enrich their communities.
