Amber Lowery is an Assistant Director for the Roanoke City Public Libraries in Roanoke, VA where she focuses on services to youth and families, upholding the libraries mission to engage, educate and empower. In this role, she develops literacy-based programs, collects data for strategic planning, and builds partnership with other community organizations to strengthen the stretch of the library. Amber works directly under the Director of Libraries on building projects, staff management, project development and budget initiatives.
Amber collaborates with a variety of local and national organizations & stakeholders to bring awards, funding & additional resources to Roanoke residents. Since 2012, she has worked closely with the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (CGLR) through Roanoke’s Star City Reads initiative, ensuring that every child in Roanoke has the support needed to be lifelong learners. This initiative has brought additional resources to the Roanoke Public Libraries and the families they serve and has allowed them to give away over 230,000 books to the community. Amber has also been instrumental in the development of the Feed and Read Program at the Roanoke Public Libraries, serving over 300,000 meals to children after-school and in the summer since 2014.
Previously, Amber held various library positions including Library Assistant, Library Associate and Children’s Librarian. She earned her MLS from Florida State University and holds a BA in Communication from Virginia Tech. Amber takes great pride in serving the community by listening to the struggles citizens are experiencing and connecting them to community partners. As a manager, she enjoys empowering staff to take the lead on new initiatives, making small changes with great impact. Amber lives in Roanoke, Virginia with her husband and five children. She enjoys spending time with her family, attending kid-sporting events, traveling and making numerous trips to the grocery store.
