Virginia Tech
Amanda Hensley is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health Program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She is a Graduate Research Assistant for the integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia and a Fellow in the Interfaces for Global Change Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program. She is currently working on systematic reviews for engagement strategies in vaccine uptake, recruitment methods of underrepresented populations in research, as well as the creation and evaluation of community-facing messaging about clinical research participation.
In her academic career, Amanda earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia, which led to a decade-long career in publishing as an editor of scientific journals, books, conference proceedings, and encyclopedias. She later returned to higher education to earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Hollins University in 2016 and a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Radford University Carilion in 2019. While working on her Master’s Degree, Amanda had the opportunity to work in the Youth Services Department of Roanoke Public Libraries as well as Carilion Clinic’s Community Health and Outreach Department. From these experiences, Amanda began developing and facilitating community outreach events. She created Carilion Clinic’s quarterly publication Easy Health, which is a printed and digital community resource of local events and programs from various Roanoke non-profit organizations, categorized by social determinants of health and distributed at local venues including libraries.
Amanda’s research interests are in public health and implementation science, infectious disease prevention, science communication, community engagement of health- and research-related topics and processes, and science-policy interface. Through community partnerships, it is her hope that scientists and researchers can engage the public about science- and health-related topics and create educational opportunities to improve health outcomes.
