Libraries and librarians are busy! Metadata librarians want to provide their users with access to electronic resources and physicals titles, but often metadata records become shorter and less complete due to lack of time. Librarians can utilize student workers to contribute to metadata records, but they may lack the knowledge base to create in-depth, culturally sensitive metadata that is broadly accessible to a wide range of patrons.
Metadata librarians can teach student workers how to use ChatGPT to assist in creating metadata. Student workers must learn how to create accurate prompts to employ ChatGPT to gather the best possible metadata, and then they must learn how to evaluate ChatGPT’s results with a rubric provided by their supervisor. Together metadata librarians and student workers can collaborate to create timely, accurate data.
This presentation will demonstrate how metadata librarians and student workers use ChatGPT to create abstracts and keywords for electronic dissertations and theses shared on the website, Shareok.org. It will provide best-practices for both utilizing ChatGPT and evaluating its output.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of ChatGPT in basic metadata tasks.
Show the audience that ChatGPT can summarize large selections of text quickly.
Demonstrate how students use ChatGPT to determine keywords.
