How do you renovate a library for the missing patron - the patron whose needs are not met by the current space? Whether that's a student with special needs, an immigrant, a working parent, a disabled senior or a freelancer, there are some people in every community who have space needs that your current library doesn't satisfy.

This workshop will help you:
1. Evaluate your community and identify underserved segments
2. Understand the space needs of new patrons
3. Analyze your existing space using visual mapping techniques from retail.
4. Create a zone plan that translates needs into space.

Join NYU Professor and author of "Library Space Planning: A PLA Guide" David Vinjamuri, and award-winning architect Joe Huberty for this hands-on exploration of space development.

Learning Objectives:

Create a research plan that will identify and engage with marginalized and emerging groups in the service population of the library.
List and explain current zone conflicts, noise, sightline and other issues in the existing space.
Create a heat map that reflects library use and collection circulation on a circulation-per-square-foot normalized basis.
Create daypart maps of the library by user type and use for each relevant part of the day in the library.
Create a revised zone plan (block/bubble chart) that library staff, board, space planner and architect can negotiate.
