Stronger Together: A Summary of Priorities and Best Practices from National Heritage Month EDI Symposiums

Hear from national experts who participated in our symposia and brainstorm ideas on how best to support underserved members of your community during our session. As part of our longstanding commitment to ALA’s affirmation of EDI through the Library Bill of Rights, the San Jose State University School of Information will share two years' worth of library EDI best practices gathered through our free online heritage month symposia featuring leaders throughout the LIS field. Presenters have had the opportunity to share their stories about how they entered the LIS field, their advice for current students about to enter the field, as well as best practices for librarians who are currently working in the field. Our diverse symposia topics have ranged from “How LGBTQIA+ Librarians Shape Libraries Today,'' “Hispanic Heritage Month Symposium: Unifying the Information Community,” to “A Celebration of Black History Month: Equity in Libraries, 2023 and Beyond.”

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate how equity, diversity, and inclusion can be applied in the context of libraries and information-related organizations.
  • Provide best practices for current library professionals on how to further incorporate EDI values into their work.
  • Expand collaborations with others by providing a space for others to share their stories as it relates to EDI.
  • Describe comprehensive resources freely available for applied EDI and best practices in libraries and information organizations.
