Hiring is time-consuming, staffing gaps are real, and patron demand for the latest and greatest never ends.. Take your staff to the next level with deliberate and curated on-the-job employee development. Intentional conversations, creative thinking and goal-setting with your employees can expand your services and programming, build buy-in and trust within your team, and create an in-house talent pool that you can draw on for internal promotion. After the initial training and onboarding of new employees, it can be easy to defer all future training and development to required in-house training and periodic professional in-person or virtual learning opportunities. Many times the burden of advancement in skills or even attaining a next level position is left in the hands of only the most self-motivated employees. This session will share how one academic library middle manager reframed the onboarding and training dynamics at her institution to meet current and newly hired employees where they were and focus on where they wanted to go next.
Learning Objectives:
Identify internal opportunities for employees looking to add to existing skills or develop new ones
Utilize the strengths and interests of your team to enhance and expand the library's services and programs
Improve communication and understanding between supervisor and employee about the importance of ongoing training
Design a more nuanced development track approach for all employees that extends the traditional onboarding and training period
