Establishing Early Children's Literacy Book Ecosystems in Indigenous Communities: Reading Nation Waterfall

Reading Nation Waterfall, a $1.4 million early children’s literacy IMLS National Leadership Grant involving five tribal communities in four states, is a collaboration between participating tribes and faculty, staff, and students, with a core goal of building collaborations between community partners and developing book ecosystems. Reading scores and grade equivalency continue to be issues for many tribal communities, and libraries can play a core and anchor role in supporting and prioritizing literacy among community organizations. This program includes topics such as building and sustaining partnerships, expanding access, community-driven approaches, civic engagement, sustainability, and disaster response. Through a mix of polls, surveys, and a presentation to highlight the importance of book ecosystems within under served communities in critical stages of literacy development, attendees will be given tools to be able to identify how to establish a book ecosystem in their communities and will be better prepared to discuss and address the pros and cons of establishing a book ecosystem.
